Connexions - offering support for teenagers

Connexions is the government’s support service for all young people aged 13–19 in England. It offers support through personal advisers, who can provide not only careers advice but advice on health, housing, relationships, money, travel, disability and legal rights.

It can also be a gateway to more specialist support, for example on drug abuse, sexual health and homelessness. Connexions personal advisers work in schools, colleges, community centres and on an outreach basis.

Below is an example of a pathway into work for a child with learning difficulties and disabilities.

Janine’s story

Janine’s dream had always been to work with the ‘big cats’, but she felt it was impossible because of her learning disabilities and mild cerebral palsy. Her Connexions service thought otherwise. Janine was helped to get a Saturday job in a local pet shop – looking after small rodents, not large lions! Her literacy and numeracy skills improved because she needed to identify and weigh out the animals’ food.

Janine’s school encouraged volunteering and Janine became a volunteer at a local animal rescue centre. She also started helping with a local Riding for Disabled People scheme.

Janine has abandoned the idea of big cats in favour of smaller ones now she is on a work-based learning scheme at the Children’s Zoo while she studies part time for a health and safety certificate at her local FE college. She is currently helping the staff to develop an access plan to improve access for disabled children and young people throughout the zoo.
