Understanding learning difficulties and disabilities in the workplace

A number of organisations provide training, consultancy and resources to promote understanding of difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders and other ‘hidden’ disabilities.

By increasing awareness of these differences within education and employment, individuals have the opportunity to unlock their true potential.

Key 4 Learning

Key 4 Learning provides training and consultancy on dyslexia and other hidden disabilities in schools, colleges in education and the workplace, both in the UK and overseas.
They have produced screening tools for FE colleges and interactive toolkits for organisations and schools to promote understanding and development of the performance of employees and students who learn differently. Key 4 Learning also provides support materials and training sessions for employers, schools, colleges, universities, trade unions and individuals and have produced a Hidden Disabilities Toolkit - an invaluable, interactive tool for developing skills and knowledge for both the employer and the employee designed to promote the skills of all the team members.

Jo Todd, who established Key 4 Learning 10 years ago, says:

Disability legislation places a duty on employers to support their employees who have disabilities, but compliance with legislation is a secondary outcome – the first is improvement in business performance. We work with individuals to create disclosure documents that give employers a more personalised view of their strengths and appropriate adjustments that will maximise performance. This document is useful for transition from school to higher and further education as well as to employment.

Experience has shown companies that a ‘whole-organisation approach’ is important if managing different abilities is to be effective and is to utilise the many gifts of different thinkers.

The elements of a 'whole-organisation approach' include better understanding of hidden disabilities through:

  • staff awareness training
  • individual identification, assessment and disclosure
  • individual development through mentoring
  • liaison with line managers and when appropriate internal peer groups
  • reasonable adjustment and accommodation in work practice
  • change in human resource policies.
